The Town of Melrose issued its weekly newsletter Oct. 30, covering Election Day voting, Halloween events, yard waste collection, street sweeping and road work for the days ahead.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. All Melrose voters cast ballots at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School gym, entering via Melrose Street, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Council on Aging minibus will visit local senior housing buildings, including the Cefalo Memorial Complex, Levi Gould/Fuller House, Cochrane House, McCarthy House and Steele House, to drive voters to the polls and wait to bring them home; no reservation is needed. Residents of any age needing an individual ride can call the Council on Aging at 781-665-4304 during business hours.
The Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Trick or Treat on Main Street Friday, Oct. 30, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Main Street between Upham and Grove streets will be closed to traffic from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and MBTA buses will be rerouted. The Melrose Family YMCA's 17th annual Spooky Sprint 5K runs Saturday, Oct. 31, at 8:30 a.m., starting at the Y, passing through Pine Banks Park and finishing back at the Y.
Curbside yard waste collection runs the week of Nov. 2. Accepted material includes leaves, grass clippings and bundled brush up to one inch in diameter, with no dirt allowed; it should be placed out by 7 a.m. on the regular collection day. The City Yard at 72 Tremont Street takes yard waste drop-offs Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will accept carved and uncarved pumpkins for composting Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The Public Works Department begins its Fall Street Sweeping Program Monday, Nov. 2, organized by voting wards and precincts; residents can check a ward and precinct map on the city website and should move vehicles off scheduled streets.
Weather permitting, the city will work on the W. Wyoming Avenue eastbound lane from the Stoneham line to Cleveland Street from Oct. 30 to Nov. 6, limiting street parking and traffic and affecting driveway access for residents. Questions can go to Scott Dixon in the Engineering office at 781-979-4172.
Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks move back one hour.
