Melrose Council Approves Nuisance Orders, Insurance Renewal, and Bridge Update

MELROSE — June 21, 2018 — Melrose City Council approved nuisance abatement orders, an insurance renewal, and a conduit financing consent at its June 21 meeting. The council honored a Melrose High School track athlete who won the state 800-meter title and set a new school record with a time of one minute, 56.23 seconds. Chamber President Tom Bootie previewed Riverfest, projecting attendance of up to 3,000 for Saturday's parade and big-band evening. The council approved a general liability and property insurance premium of $173,843, split 34 percent to the general fund and 66 percent to utilities, and consented to the refinancing of a $6.5 million conduit bond on behalf of ProLiant at no cost to the city. Two nuisance abatement resolutions — for properties at 823 First Street Southeast and 2932 Tammy — were approved after multiple rounds of inspection and personal service of notice. The Fifth Avenue Bridge project's environmental assessment worksheet entered a 30-day public comment period, with construction now unlikely before 2020 after the current state bonding cycle allocated only $5 million statewide.
