Melrose Select Board Tables Fire Escrow Vote, Seeks Written Policy Terms

MELROSE — August 21, 2025 — Melrose Select Board delays fire escrow decision for a third month, seeking attorney-drafted terms. The board tabled Resolution 2025-32, which would enroll the city in a state program allowing it to withhold up to 25 percent of a fire insurance settlement until a property owner demonstrates progress on demolition or rebuilding, after members could not agree on return conditions. Community Development Director Sheila and City Administrator Queen proposed having the city attorney draft a memorandum of understanding spelling out timeframes and thresholds before any vote. The program was first recommended to Fire Chief Poody by the state fire marshal following a recent local structure fire. In other action, the board unanimously approved a 10-year Charter Spectrum franchise agreement worth approximately $18,000 per year in fees, a $20,159 ambulance vent machine purchase funded by a state EMS grant, and a $13,250 flatbed trailer split 60-40 between utility and general fund accounts.
