Melrose Board Sets Cannabis Hearing, Approves Main Street Grant Resolution

MELROSE — October 23, 2023 — Melrose Select Board swears in new officer, sets cannabis public hearing for November 16. The board unanimously approved a resolution supporting a state Local Road Improvement Program grant application for the Main Street West reconstruction project, which caps at $1.5 million and requires Stearns County as a sponsor because Melrose is classified as a small city. City Attorney Scott explained that state statute requires a public hearing before the city can restrict public cannabis use, saying the proposed ordinance would largely mirror the county's existing rules and give the city "your own law on the books." The board also authorized advertising for the Streets and Parks Supervisor position following Gary Mittendorf's notice of retirement after more than 40 years with the city, effective February 29, 2024. Community Development Director Sheila reported 255 building permits totaling more than $25.7 million issued through the third quarter.
